I grew up in the place where they invented these signs. I always wanted to just post a billboard on the highway into town saying
"NO THIS, THAT, OR THE OTHER"
Controlling the environment is something that nomadic tribes became good at, since they were always in a battle with nature. Thus, a god who represses and controls. In absence of an active god, signs will have to do.
