draconian

We need money to live. Cities are no exception. But $1000? The small print says the thousand is the Maximum fine. Has it ever been assessed? On a really rich dog? Dog who pinched one in the Police commissioner's hat?
Over the last year, the city ticketed only 471 dog-waste violations, which suggests that the typical offender stands a roughly 1-in-8,000 chance of getting a ticket.--NYT 2005

Loomings

There now is your insular city of the Manhattoes, belted round by wharves as Indian isles by coral reefs--commerce surrounds it with her surf. Right and left, the streets take you waterward. Its extreme downtown is the battery, where that noble mole is washed by waves, and cooled by breezes, which a few hours previous were out of sight of land. Look at the crowds of water-gazers there.--H. Melville

Rives Street

When I was little I wondered why so many places turned the alphabet off. Reading without comprehension is mixed blessing. I worried about the infamous Sand-Witch, she was everywhere.

There is no set curriculum, no government course, for learning how to be a neighbor, how to behave in the public realm.

succession

lost an old oak tree yesterday. The first large oak I have lost. Swamp chestnut oak (quercus michauxii), swamp white oak? People say oaks hybridize easily, have never been certain of this one's name. Three foot dbh. The tree fell perfectly, lots of juvenille oaks ready for the race to the light.

Ash Wednesday

The roadside location above was unproblematic.
The location below was in a residential front-yard. I approached the house, knocked on the door. Waited several minutes. Hoping to secure permission, alert the homeowner to my presence. Homeowner appeared while I was taking pictures and invited me to leave the property lickety-split.

...and when I get through with you, you're gonna need saving.

on the road

The first day of driving I told myself I'd stop every time I saw Jesus name. Lot of stopping. First four hours in south-central Virginia and North Carolina I only covered sixty miles.

day of unrest

Ten commandments at seventy mph. Have missed blogging, in search of the promise land.
Today we have been transcribing discussion regarding the Timberlake-Branham farm. Need help. There are passages that contain ???.
If you listen to the audio and figure out the true missing words, bless you.
Thou shall not mis-transcribe.

alfalfa-Medicago sativa. The plant grows to a height of up to 1 metre, and has a deep root system sometimes stretching to 4.5 metres. This makes it very resilient, especially to droughts.--Wikipedia
Alfalfa- Carl Switzer, child star.
Switzer then allegedly pulled a knife and was attempting to stab Stiltz with it, but just as Switzer was about to charge Stiltz, Stiltz raised the gun and shot Switzer in the chest. Switzer died of intense blood loss while on his way to the hospital. He was 31 years old.--Wikipedia

there is an organization for everyone

I wonder if the pawn shops of America have an association, K street representation, lobbyists? Do they have advertising professionals on the payroll to ameliorate public perception regarding pawn shops? Do they contribute a percentage of their gross to "feel-good" causes. Can anyone send me a positive pawn shop story?
Ask and it will be answered. Yes, there is a national association with a website and FAQ's.
Question: How does a pawnbroker's business work?
Question: Why would someone go to a pawnbroker to get a loan?
Question: What is the foreclosure procedure?
Question: Do most pawn customers lose their merchandise?
Question: How can I be sure the merchandise I purchase at a pawnshop isn't stolen?
Question: What is the difference between buying at a pawnshop and buying at a retail store?
Question: Why is the image of pawnbroking changing since the 1930s?
Question: How are pawnbrokers regulated?
Question: Is pawnbroking a "bad times" industry?
Question: Do pawnbrokers attract indigents and derelicts?
Question: Do pawnbrokers downgrade the neighborhood and hurt property value?
Question: Are there firearms in pawnshops?
Question: Are pawnshops rates excessive?
There is a Virginia pawnbrokers association as well. Their website seems to be broken. Virginia pawnbrokers are feeling threatened by a state legislature that runs a gambling operation? Ironies abound...
