What information is in these wires? Why all the separate conductors? These lines characteristically found paralleling railroad tracks in earlier years.

Erm... telegraph? That's my best guess.
More nodern stuff, too, like voice and data calls (in some parts of the country, when you plug in your dial-up modem, this is part of the route your connection will be travelling.
