Good street design encourages the safe coexistence of pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers. A pedestrian hit at 40 mph has an 85% chance of being killed, while at 20 mph, the fatality rate is only 5%.

Reminds me of a joke-
"A turtle is crossing the road when he's mugged by 2 snails. When the police show up, they ask him what happened. The shaken turtle replies, 'I don't know. It all happened so fast.'"
