Winston tastes good

Winston's advertising slogan, Winston tastes good like a cigarette should poked a stick in the grammarians' hive. Winston made the most of the furor offering a "good grammar" library, Better English Made Easy, A New Guide to Better Writing and four other reference works for the smokin' masses.

time the avenger

AWS, DWS, Shifflet's Mill, VA
Even your wife and kids
Could be gone next year
And with what you have left
Youll be forever under pressure
To support her
And a lover who looks strangely
Like time the avenger- The Pretenders

Carson poses

Posing. I've never had a talent for giving direction to portrait subjects. I share the discomfort that 95% of humanity feels when a camera is aimed their way, and have no easy words to alleviate the unease.
I made a formal portrait of my mother twelve years ago. We drank a bottle of wine first, that helped a little.
When photographed, children typically are directed to smile. I think they get tired of that. I encourage children to anti-smile. Ah! A delightful new instruction!
Serious is part of childhood too.

Crozet Virginia

Left the Woolen Mills Village for a few hours Wednesday. The Charlottesville Planning Commission gave me a twenty four hour hall pass. Carried some of Jinx Kern's WMV barbeque and went to check in with Central Virginia photographer Charlie Shoffner.
Charlie is my age and makes images that are too beautiful to look at on the Internet. At the moment Charlie is speechless, a stroke grabbed his language. He communicates a lot with no words. We drove around his Crozet neighborhood.
Charlie pointed out some shots for me to take, I tried, but I do not have his color mojo.

not forgotten

?Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather
have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.? - Aristotle

Malcolm Holcombe's
CD will be released tomorrow. Malcolm's music was the inspiration a year back for a photo essay on excellence.

Lazarus

I am thankful for the serious people. For the people whose life work makes a difference. I haven't met many of them, my life is narrowly circumscribed, 90% of my time spent between Secretary's Ford, Riverbend and the Timberlake house. Don't get out much.

Circumstances brought me into contact with the serious man above. Engineer turned medical man. Head of the UVA Urology department. I can't do his resume justice so, my shorthand description for him, he is my medical Jesus.

Gratitude and thanks. This man, and his dedicated colleagues, RN's, PA's, MD's, hospital staff- this group of people gave me a shot at a long life.

How will it work out? It might, it might not. Too early to know. I am cautiously optimistic. The thing is, the UVA Urology department is doing technologically miraculous work. It's a complicated team effort. William Steers MD is head of the team.

Dr. Steers gave me life five months ago.

Heartfelt thanks.

road to hell

Had a party for Sophie. Emma and Helen came over, walked the 'hood. Happiness is numbers for Soph, in a pack and roaming.

Broccoli, bread and burgers for dinner.

It's a serious undertaking, sponsoring creatures in the world.

friends

The photographers came to my house last night, from Kuala Lumpur, from Greensboro, from Charlottesville, from Tye River. Friends are a sweet thing. Looked at photos, drank scotch, laughed. Sophie ate a plate of cookies.

dream

I managed to catch a few minutes of the Scorsese piece about Bob Dylan. Seeing the words come out of the young genius's mouth. Felt like I was watching biblical videotape.

Put me in mind of Bob Dylan's Dream.

Spent memorable time with these people. We were three married couples, we had six kids, spent seven years congregating, eating, drinking, laughing, playing.

With haunted hearts through the heat and cold

we never thought we could get very old

We thought we could sit forever in fun,

But our chances really were a million to one.
-bob

All the marriages are over.

Memory and friendship remain.
