day of rest

Hilton Head Island, thirty three years ago. Dr. Emory Campbell was in the house that day. I think the preacher's name was Reverend Matthew McCollom, president of the Orangeburg, SC, NAACP

Brian's ladder

After a decade in the Woolen Mills my friend and neighbor Brian sought greener, quieter pastures. He wanted a road without cars and a skyline without street lights. He found same, nestled into the Southwestern Mountains, north of town. Brian's ladder stayed behind, frozen in the snow. The snow melted three days ago. I didn't know exactly where Brian lived, but I knew his house was along this rural road. Left the ladder on the side of the road. He found it.

MA

The Massachusetts Bay Colony was named after the indigenous population, the Massachusett, whose name can be segmented as mass-adchu-s-et, where mass- is "large", -adchu- is "hill", -s- is a diminutive suffix meaning "small", and -et is a locative suffix, identifying a place.--Wikipedia

We need money to live. Cities are no exception. But $1000? The small print says the thousand is the Maximum fine. Has it ever been assessed? On a really rich dog? Dog who pinched one in the Police commissioner's hat?
Over the last year, the city ticketed only 471 dog-waste violations, which suggests that the typical offender stands a roughly 1-in-8,000 chance of getting a ticket.--NYT 2005

fashion

January 1, every year in memory, the WaPo runs a list of what is out what is in fashion. Being a curmudgeon who doesn't watch TV, I understand the humor or relevance of few of the pairings. They are primarily evanescent fashion items, sports and entertainment references. I wish they'd write an article explaining why each was significant.
